Valley Labor Report July 3: Rail Workers Slam Feuding Union Leadership
Article: “One Big Bargaining Coalition - An Idea Whose Time has Come”
For too long, rail labor has been fragmented and divided. Today, in the face of "Precision Scheduled Railroading", mass layoffs and furloughs, carrier threats to run trains with a single crew member, attacks on health care and vital work rules, it is imperative that ALL rail crafts and ALL rail unions stand together in bargaining. Let your voice be heard!
Despite US railroaders facing challenges from craft unions, numerous efforts have been made over the years to build rail labor coalitions, including the American Railway Union, Railroad Employee Department (RED) of the AFL, United Rail Operating Crafts (UROC), Railroad Operating Crafts United (ROCU), All Rail Crafts Coalition (ARCC), and Railroad Workers United (RWU). These endeavors, though imperfect, are crucial to the history of rail labor and provide valuable lessons for creating a universal bargaining coalition.
