Statements of Support for RWU
“Their motto says it all: Solidarity. Unity. Democracy. In RWU those aren't just abstract concepts. They are living and breathing in the struggles they take on, like opposing single person crews and honoring the lives of those who have died on the job. The whole labor movement needs a good dose of RWU!”
— Gail Francis; former Field Organizer for United Electrical (UE); former Communications Director at Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU); currently the Strategic Director for the RE-AMP Network; Duluth, MN
I joined RWU ten years ago as a Solidarity Member when I first found out about their work. I have belonged to two unions with significant rail and rail manufacturing memberships - ATU and UE - and the need for cross-craft and cross-union coordination and solidarity is critical. The railroad employers and their political front-men are hell-bent on the destruction of jobs and worker safety and RWU stays on top of these fights - and does that on a shoestring. The work of the scattered unions is not enough. RWU is needed to provide the push, the analysis, and the relentless mobilization towards the RWU goals of Solidarity among the crafts, Unity among the unions, and Democracy for the membership in our unions. Rail labor and our entire labor movement needs RWU and I urge you to support them however you are able. Chris Townsend, Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Director of New Organizing; retired United Electrical Workers Union (UE) Washington representative; Washington, DC.
RWU’s efforts to unite all crafts and unions in the rail industry has succeeded in stopping some of the most reactionary attacks on rail workers, their safety and the safety of the public. For the working class to build a better future, this kind of solidarity and unity across all crafts and unions is essential! Dave Poklinkoski, President Emeritus, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #1245; Madison, WI
Railroad Workers United is a passionate group that has worked countless hours working to improve railroad safety, using their collective knowledge, years of service, and communication skills in a concerted effort to better manage risk. As the saying goes, “keep on keeping on”, RWU is making a difference. George Swimmer, Safety Advocate and author of "Railroad Collision: A Deadly Story of Mismanaged Risk"; Chicago, IL.
I support Railroad Workers United, a national caucus of active and retired rail workers --- passenger and freight ---- drawn from all the rail unions and from a “solidarity” membership of friends and activists from outside the industry. The RWU struggles not only against the short-sighted greed of top management and its masters on Wall Street, but against concessionary bargaining and self-defeating rivalry on the part of the unions themselves. The RWU supports the interests, not only of rail workers, but of railroad customers (shippers), safety, the environment, and the general public. JW Madison, President, Rails Inc; Albuquerque, NMRailroad Workers United is a passionate group that has worked countless hours working to improve railroad safety, using their collective knowledge, years of service, and communication skills in a concerted effort to better manage risk. As the saying goes, “keep on keeping on”, RWU is making a difference. George Swimmer, Safety Advocate and author of "Railroad Collision: A Deadly Story of Mismanaged Risk"; Chicago, IL.
As the lone female machinist at the Milwaukee Road, I wish RWU had been around in the 1970’s and ’80. I knew some other workers - including me - back then that would have joined such an organization that was committed to the struggle for workers’ justice. One especially was a railroad “Rosie” named Verona Guinn. I met her the last year I was making wheels (on a wheel bore machine from the early 1930s!) We were sisters from that day on. We finally knew that each other existed and we remained friends at work and off, until she passed on in 2018. She became a proud member of Railroad Workers United after I joined and told her about it in our weekly phone conversations…Milwaukee to Oakland CA where I now live. Verona was a fighter for railroad worker justice and she will be my Railroad Sister as long as I’m still around. Sue Doro, Retired Machinist, Milwaukee Road 1976-1986. Founder & Editor Pride and a Paycheck, CA; Oakland, CA
Too often, railroad workers and their unions dismiss passenger rail advocates and railfans without thinking through the enormous potential of united action in coalition with them. How many industries and services have a following of enthusiastic people who will donate their time and money to promote a product or service because they believe in it? RWU understands this potential, and has resolved to build mutual respect while uniting behind a program that will expand the national network of trains and bring the benefits of passenger rail to more communities. Paul Dyson, Editor, Steel Wheels Magazine, Burbank, CA
Sierra Club is committed to working with community partners to create a healthy, sustainable economy that works for everyone, not just wealthy investors. And of course, rail is an essential part of any clean, sustainable transportation system. I have been impressed with the commitment my RWU partners have shown to safety, sustainability, and family-supporting jobs throughout our communities. We at the Sierra Club look forward to working with RWU to achieve our shared goals for the future. Brian Beffort, Toiyabe Chapter Director, Sierra Club (NV and eastern CA); Reno, NV
I wish to express my strong support for Railroad Workers United. The history of democracy in the United States has always been shaped by the power of workers. Bosses and politicians will forever ignore the needs of working people unless we organize against them. The RWU is part of that long American of tradition resisting illegitimate power. In 1857, abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglas reminded us that if there is no struggle there is no progress. “Power concedes nothing without a demand,” he said. “It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them…The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” After the Civil War, workers created the Knights of Labor because the “aggression of aggregated wealth,” led to the “pauperization and hopeless segregation of the toiling masses.” They refused to endure oppression. In 1892 farmers and workers created the Populist, or People’s Party because, “The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes for a few, unprecedented in the history of mankind; and the possessors of those, in turn, despise the republic and endanger liberty. From the same prolific womb of governmental injustice we breed the two great classes - tramps and millionaires.” As a result of their organizing, the bosses and millionaires were forced to enact the graduated income tax, the secret ballot, the direct election of Senators and the eight-hour-day. In 1905 the Industrial Workers of the World was formed in Chicago because, “The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things of life. Between these two classes a struggle must go on until all the toilers come together on the political, as well as on the industrial field, and take and hold that which they produce by their labor through an economic organization of the working class, without affiliation with any political party.” Because of labor unrest during the Great Depression, the bosses and politicians were finally forced to legalize unions and collective bargaining. Carry on this great tradition! Join and support the RWU! In your hands is placed a power greater than their hoarded gold, because the Union makes you strong. Solidarity Forever! Mike Konopacki, Labor Cartoonist; St. Augustine, FL
For decades, management of the big rail carriers has played the numerous and fragmented rail unions off against each other. RWU is working hard to end that lack of solidarity, and to strengthen the position of all rail workers. Jim Cavanaugh, retired President of the South Central Federation of Labor (1986-2012); Madison, WI.
As Secretary/Treasurer of the National Association of Retired & Veteran Railway Employees (NARVRE) Unit #61 here in Oakland, California - the only organization whose sole purpose is to protect, promote and preserve our Railroad Retirement System - we make use of Railroad Workers United publications under “Communications” during our regular monthly meetings. RWU material is both timely and informative, and we consider it a a trusted source. We look forward to RWU staffing a table at our National Biennial Convention in May of 2022 where your literature and membership forms will be available for the attendees to obtain. Robert Paulson, aka Bad Order Bob, Secretary/Treasurer, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees - Unit # 61; Oakland CA
Railroad Workers United fills an important information gap for railroaders. When I was working 8-on 8-off as a conductor/switchman/brakeman, I didn’t have time to go to UTU meetings. I was too busy trying to get my rest. I certainly didn’t know what other crafts were dealing with. Often, the crafts seemed to be pitted against each other by the company. By being a clearing house for all railroad crafts, RWU gives us a forum to discuss and become informed about issues that affect us all, particularly those involving safety. Linda Grant Niemann, Professor Emerita at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, retired trainman on the Southern Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroad, author of Boomer: Railroad Memoirs, Railroad Voices, and Railroad Noir.
I stand in solidarity with Railroad Workers United and their continued efforts in protecting and supporting workers, families and communities, against corporate greed and flawed governments. By working to support each other we are able to stay focused, stay on track and keep the lines of communication rigged up and ready for action. Jamison Roberts Vice President of International Longshore and Warehouse Workers (ILWU) Local #4; Vancouver, WA
The rail unions are still blessed with the hammer of the Secondary Boycott, and with that power you can push to get things done. If you ALL WORK TOGETHER, you can make it happen. Railroad Workers United has worked tirelessly to build that unity and solidarity among railroad workers that is necessary! Jimmy Smith, President / Business Agent, Teamsters Local # 896 (retired); Vice President RailPac of California & Nevada; Los Angeles, CA
Climate Rail Alliance stands in support of Railroad Workers United in their fight to protect working people in the rail industry, and for their advocacy for rail as a climate solution that needs urgent attention. Thomas White, Independent Rail Consultant, rail advocate, and author of The Climate Emergency: Trains - An Effective Response at VTD.net; Lael and Thomas White, co-founders of climaterailalliance.org
Solutionary Rail is a proud ally of Railroad Workers United in their fight against single person crews which threaten worker and public safety, and against so-called Precision Scheduled Railroading, a ruse to siphon off short-term profits to shareholders. Solutionary Rail locks arms with RWU in the fight for a greatly enhanced pro-worker, pro-climate railroad system in the US, providing family wage jobs and safe, dignified working conditions. Bill Moyer, Project Lead, Solutionary Rail; Vashon, WA
It is with great pleasure that we, as officers of NARVRE Unit #61 in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, endorse and support the on-going work being done by Railroad Workers United to forge a new consensus of solidarity among current and retired railroad workers. As with many industries, there has been a technological revolution that has automated and reduced overall employment on the nation's railroads. With the proper vision however, we can forge ahead and create new employment capacity based on the environmental need to expand and re-tool the rail system. RWU has been able to keep our members well-informed with its Rail News updates and communication efforts. We are proud to support this organization and its efforts. Brian Lewis, Legislative Representative, & Robert Paulson, Sec/Treasurer; NARVRE Unit #61; Bay Area, CA
Railroad Workers United provides a vital function cultivating solidarity for all workers who work on the rails in North America. They exemplify community building, alliance building, cross border solidarity, and working to build a new social justice movement for workers and communities. RWU recognized early that the labor and environmental movements, when linked together, can be an unstoppable force. They will be a part of our common future. This is why we support Railroad Workers United. Joe Uehlein, President, Labor Network for Sustainability; Washington, D.C.
The People's Party supports Railroad Workers United (RWU) and their work of amplifying the voices of railroad workers in North America. People of all professions must organize and fight against the corporate power structure that suppresses the freedom, well-being and dignity of workers. RWU has led that fight on our railroads. The People's Party is of, by, and for working people. We reject all corporate money and influence and are free to stand genuinely and unequivocally with labor. In our struggle to shift power in our government and workplaces back to the people, we are proud to join with RWU and support their mission of uniting railroad workers of different crafts and unions for the benefit of not just all railroad workers, but of workers everywhere. Movement for a People’s Party
The Rail Users' Network is proud of the work that the Railroad Workers United is doing to win the fight for two person crews which should be required nation-wide not only to protect rail workers, but also to insure the safety of the people living in the communities where the nation's railroads operate. We also appreciate their effort to help not only restore daily passenger rail service on Amtrak's 12 Long Distance routes but also to improve and expand passenger rail all across the nation. Richard Rudolph, Chair, Rail Users’ Network; Portland, ME
I have been a Solidarity Member of RWU since 2015. In this time, I have learned so much about what railroad workers are up against. I truly had no idea what an archaic business model the railroads companies use. The only way for us to make change is for unlikely groups to find common ground and band together so that we can create change. RWU creates a platform for this to happen. There is no other way we can win. When you join RWU, you scare the shit out of the powers-that-be. Let’s take our power and be in it together. Abby Brockway, Climate Activist, Everett/Delta 5; Seattle, WA
Railroad Workers United represents a unique opportunity for cross-sector solidarity. At a time when US railroad infrastructure has been taken captive by Wall Street profiteers - greedily extracting 170 years of investment to maximize short term profits - RWU is more important than ever. RWU is making a difference in turning the tide on the “divide and conquer” strategy employed by the corporations and in building solidarity with social movement forces who put jobs, people, and the planet above corporate profits. Backbone Campaign; Vashon Island WA
Railroad Workers United is a shining example of what a rail labor union ought to be. Namely, a voice for rail workers of all crafts, a source of information on Rail Labor’s plight, and a platform for solidarity among working-class people everywhere. Many aspects of railroading are solitary. Consequently, the rank-and-file railroader’s voice is seldom heard over the roar of the autocrat “leader” at the top of their union. RWU provides the forum for those who pull the throttles, lace the air hoses, fix the rail cars and locomotives, maintain the right-of-way, dispatch the trains, that move the freight and passengers on railroads everywhere, everyday (and night). Plus, RWU keeps an impressive historical account of contractual information and of the attacks industry has perpetrated against the various railroad crafts over the years that has assisted me in my battles for rail worker safety and justice. Thank you to RWU’s International Steering Committee both past and present. The work you do is invaluable. Mike Elliott, Railroad Worker (retired), FRSA Whistleblower; former Chair, BLET Washington State Legislative Board; Tacoma, WA
Given the reorganization of the global economy in the last half century, transportation workers play an even more critical role in the labor movement than even. Railroad workers were the leading edge of the labor movement's struggles for economic justice at key moments in the past, and, when they were united, they had their greatest positive impact. Here on the East Side of St. Paul, members of the American Railway Union stood up to James J. Hill in April 1894. Their power to block traffic at a critical juncture disrupted the shipment of Midwestern flour to European markets and forced Hill to submit to an arbitration process that restored the wage cuts that he had imposed during the depression that began in 1893. Their victory inspired railroad workers in Pullman, Illinois, to stand up to their employer, the Pullman Car Company, and to extend Eugene V. Debs' vision of industrial unionism from the running trades to shop workers, leading to one of the greatest labor struggles in American history. Here on the East Side of St. Paul, we recognize and value the power of railroad workers, especially when they are united, not only in our past history but also in our future. We support Railroad Workers United for their efforts to build a movement of all railroad workers and we stand in solidarity with them. Peter Rachleff, Co-Executive Director, East Side Freedom Library; St. Paul, Minnesota
RWU takes positions within the rail industry that need to be taken. They are often controversial, many times ahead of the curve, but time and time again they have been proven right. They do so in a non-political way, which appeals to people all over the spectrum. I've been a member for a long time and have benefitted from the research and articles done by RWU. I've been able to use their information for safety classes done at the University of Iowa for rail workers and for state legislation when I was a State Representative in the Iowa House. I will continue to be an RWU member and look forward to working with them in the future to make sure rail transportation remains as safe as possible and that rail jobs become better jobs. Jeff Kurtz, Retired Locomotive Engineer, ATSF/BNSF for 40 years; BLET #391 Past President, Former BLET Iowa State Legislative Board Chairman; Former State Representative for Iowa House District 83; Fort Madison, IA
I developed an appreciation for the union movement when, as a supermarket clerk, we went on strike, and I walked picket lines for 13 weeks. Although I was fortunate to be living at home, with my parents, I developed a understanding of what members with families faced in that difficult situation. As a former railroader, and local Brotherhood official, I appreciate RWU’s effort to bring all railroad crafts together, in solidarity, to promote their common interests. As the Chair of the Rail Passengers Association (RPA), the largest grassroots organization of train riders, in campaigning for more service, I stand with you. I appreciate RWU’s efforts to spread RPA’s message. Our efforts to bring about more train services, and the upgrading of more routes for these services to operate on, will serve to benefit rail workers, by creating more jobs in more places. I would hope that rail workers will see the benefit of our joint efforts. We need to join with you, and you need to join with us. Together, we can accomplish more! Ken Briers, Chair, Rail Passengers Association (RPA); Washington, DC
I have observed the important work of Railroad Workers United for more than a decade, building solidarity among railroad workers from the myriad crafts and unions. In addition to their efforts to bring rail workers together, RWU has worked to open lines of communication with other rank and file logistics workers – longshore, warehouse, trucking - along the supply chain. And their recognition of the need to build bridges with the environmental movement has brought the rail workers’ struggle to a broad audience. This kind of innovative work is what we need to jumpstart the labor movement and build a universal popular coalition, one capable of ushering in a new progressive era in the coming years. David Newby, former President Wisconsin State AFL-CIO; Madison, WI
In an industry without one big wall-to-wall labor organization, the Railroad Workers United has done critically important work building a cross-craft network of rank-and-file activists committed to union democracy and reform. By working together and overcoming barriers and divisions created by old-style business unionism, RWU members have been effective fighters for better working conditions and rail safety regulation that protects both labor and the community. RWU's dedicated and persistent organizing demonstrates the power and potential of grassroots movements for change throughout U.S. labor. Steve Early, Richmond, CA.,former International Union Representative, Communications Workers of America (CWA) and author of Save Our Unions and other books about labor and politics; Richmond, CA
Railroad Workers United carries on the work of Eugene V. Debs and his American Railway Union, to create a single grouping of railroad workers. As a labor historian and labor educator, I can say that this is a hugely important task, not just for railroad workers, but for the whole labor movement. I am proud to be associated with RWU and especially support their efforts to forge alliances with organizations of Rail passengers and other stakeholders. Joe Berry, Retired labor educator, City College of San Francisco and University of Illinois; Berkeley, CA
The vision of Railroad Workers United to unite railroaders on an industrial basis is brilliantly necessary in the labor movement today. The role of the RWU in their advocacy work for real safety improvements and against single-person crews is to unite railroad workers across craft lines and that provides an example of how workers can use their industrial power in a tangible way. When workers become aware of how to use their power collectively management will learn to listen. RWU provides the platform for workers to become aware of their power, and there is no substitute for that inspiration. Justin Hirsch, Labor Relations Committee, ILWU Local #19; Seattle, WA
Railroad Workers United has been a source of inspiration and information for the Coalition to Ban Unsafe Oil Trains here in Bergen County, NJ. CSX trains go through 11 towns in Bergen County and often idle in our backyards or near schools and parks. We are concerned about many of the same rail safety issues as rail workers. For example, it is troublesome to see that the rail industry is pressing to have one-person crews. As residents, we worry about how that can impact our community as well as rail workers. Also, we are concerned about some of the hazardous materials in the trains and about problems with maintenance of the tracks and rail bridges when the rail companies are in charge of inspections. It has been so important to us to have a RWU member actually call into our meetings to discuss these issues with us so that we can, whenever possible, work together. A huge thank you to RWU for your commitment to worker and rail safety over the years! Paula Rogovin, Chairperson, Coalition to Ban Unsafe Oil Trains; Bergen County, NJ
UE appreciates the great solidarity that Railroad Workers United has shown to our members who work in or around the rail industry as well as the keen analysis and breadth of information they provide regarding the challenges facing working people in the industry. Carl Rosen, General President, United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE); Pittsburgh, PA
RWU has been a key leader in breaking down barriers between groups working for solidarity, workers' rights, and safe rail. As an environmental and sustainability advocate, I respect and support the work that RWU does in fighting for worker and public safety. Their work will be a critical part of ensuring that rail is part of the backbone of a sustainable economy. Matt Krogh, US Oil & Gas Campaign Director, Stand.Earth; Bellingham, WA
We became Solidarity Members of RWU two years ago when we learned about the organization’s important work. As legal advocates for railroad workers, we appreciate all the hard work RWU does to protect railroad workers and their families. The inclusion of all crafts and all rail union members adds to the strength of the organization and their tireless efforts to make the working environments for all railroaders safe. RWU actively fights to make sure railroaders return home safe each night to their families. The work that RWU does is vital and invaluable. We deeply appreciate being a part of this organization and help to educate and advocate for railroaders all over the country. Danny Poolson and Carisa Oden, founders of POOLSON-ODEN law firm; Metairie, Louisiana
I grew up in a railroad family. I am a union marine transport worker, and I support Railroad Workers United as a “Solidarity Member” because all of transportation is linked and an injury to one is an injury to all. What happens in rail affects workers on the water and on the road as well. Rail and water-based transportation can be a potential climate solution, since public transit as well as rail-based freight transportation are cleaner and less energy intensive than private automobile and overland truck use. Steve Ongerth, Inland Boatmen’s Union (IBU/ILWU), San Francisco Bay Area Region; Executive Committee and co-founder IWW Environmental Union Caucus; Oakland, CA
RWU brings a vital addition to rail, a critical part of the transportation and logistics industry in North America. With the century-long preference of craft union leadership to fight each other rather than rail carrier management and their minions in government, RWU is a refreshing and inspiring addition to the struggle. The voice of Eugene Debs is still with us in the workers in RWU. Every industry needs an organization like this one. Joshua Freeze, ATU #1549 Past President, bus driver; 1005 Newspaper editor, bus driver, AFA #70 Past Secretary, flight attendant; Organizer (AFA national); TDU Newspaper editor, Organizer
The importance of all working people standing together in these disparate times cannot be overstated. RWU fully understands this, and works on the wide variety of issues necessary to effect positive change - not just for workers in the rail industry - but for the democratic reforms needed for a better, more sustainable economy and society for all of us. As a Solidarity Member of RWU I've learned so much about the Rail Industry, Labor History and the dynamics of organizing others in the workplace. The structure of RWU is truly driven "from the bottom up"... A genuine Rank & File Union - something of a rarity in our modern, private sector industries. Any person interested in the Railroads being part of North America's future, a better & greener transportation infrastructure, or in a demonstrated model for labors empowerment in the workplace, should get behind RWU. Michael Boone, U.S. Forest Service - Wildland Firefighter (Retired); National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE); Activist, Advocate, and Volunteer.
