RWU Convention Resolution on Self-Help

Here is the proposed RWU Resolution on Self-Help.  Any comments or ideas for changes?

RWU Resolution on Self-Help

Whereas, Railroad Workers United has adopted the slogan “The Rank-and-File in Action!” and

Whereas, Rail Labor was first organized and built through the self-help and strike actions of tens of thousands of our forefathers who labored in the rail industry; and

Whereas, it is roundly agreed among rail workers that strike and other forms of self-help are our most powerful weapons in the battle with the Rail Carriers; and

Whereas, the right to strike has been severely limited and is under constant attack by the corporate and government world; and

Whereas, unless and until we are able to challenge the Rail Carriers without one hand tied behind our backs, rail labor will continue to have limited success in negotiations with the Rail Carriers;

Therefore, Be it Resolved, that Railroad Workers United (RWU) at its Founding Convention in Dearborn, Michigan pledges to support rail workers anywhere in North America – and around the globe – who strike or use other means of self-help against a Rail Carrier; and

Be it Further Resolved that RWU will engage in campaigns of solidarity and support whenever a rail union is engaged in such a battle with a Rail Carrier, which should include, but not limited to, bucket collections, informational picketing, solidarity actions, etc.;  and

Be it Finally Resolved that the RWU ISC will send letters of solidarity and support to the leadership and the rank-and-file of such organizations each and every time that one engages in such self-help.

Background:  Railroaders everywhere know that the right to strike, and use other forms of self-help, is vital. We also know our rights are limited. This resolution aims to show that if and when railroaders do strike or take other actions, that all of us must come to their aid and assistance. This is the best method to promote the right to strike and the best method to help our brothers and sisters prevail.
