Here is the proposed RWU Resolution on Universal Labor Solidarity. Any ideas for changes?
RWU Resolution on Universal Labor Solidarity
Whereas, Rail Labor has played a key role historically in the greater labor movement and the formation of other movements in various sectors of the economy; and
Whereas, we as rail workers are dependent upon the fortunes of the rest of the labor movement;
Whereas, rail workers operate in practically every state of the U.S. and Mexico, and in every province of Canada; and
Whereas, rail workers, by the nature of our industry, interact directly and/or indirectly with practically all other workers in most all industries; and
Whereas, we as rail workers have tremendous potential to work in solidarity with other brothers and sisters who are engaged in conflict with their employer; and
Whereas, solidarity is a two-way street -- when we assist and support our fellow workers in industry, we can rest assured that we will then have their support in our struggles with the Rail Carriers;
Therefore, Be it Resolved, that Railroad Workers United (RWU) at its Founding Convention in Dearborn, Michigan, April 11, 2008 acknowledge our support for and dependence upon the greater labor movement and the working class; and
Be in Further Resolved that RWU work to build bridges between rail labor, rail workers and the greater labor movement; and
Be it Finally Resolved that RWU pledges to support workers who are engaged in struggle with their employer, and to encourage all rail workers to always honor and support the picket lines and strikes of any and all workers and their labor unions.
Background: This resolution is basic mom-and-apple-pie unionism. The basis of power for all workers movements and all unions is the fact that they are inextricably linked to the greater labor movement and working class struggle. This resolution reaffirms what all unions should --but unfortunately do not always -- acknowledge and honor.
